DRAG CAR

Welcome to a whole new season oof lego challenge.  New people and old friend are all having fun in the first class.  For the first day, we use different gear sets and wheels to build the fastest drag race car.  It is challengeable for their age but what surprise me is that they have sort it out by themselves.  Big shout out to Leo for complete the all car by himself.  That is a huge improvement for him.  I love how Chris is so active in the class to answering questions and listening to my instructions.  Arthur’s social skills is what makes him special.  He loves to have a chat with others and share his thoughts to us.  Joshua has incredible lego skills.  He finished building first and help others with their car.  Adrian is a lego MasterBuilder in his age.  He just heads down and gets the job down with little problems for himself.  He must have played tons of lego at his home.  Last but not least, Nicholas is the ultimate drag race champion today.  He finished First in all the race.  The reason he win all of it, it is that he has the larger gear on the motor axle and smaller gear on the wheel axle.  Which means when the gear turns, the wheel spins more times;  and he has the largest wheel on the back end with smallest in front.  That is how to make an ultimate drag race car.

Communication ECA Phase 1 Class 7: Fishing Rod 20191023

Square lake Lego fishing!!! Last class we built a working fishing rod with a lego fish to go with. The rod had a crank to control the ropes movement and had a safety mechanism using a gear and a lever to stop the fish swimming away if the crank was released. This insured maximum control on our fishing voyage! The fish was built out of long beams and odd shaped pieces. Although there was no moving parts with the fish the angles the class were using in the build made a complex and challenging build. Everyone did a great job completing their fishing rods and had a lot of fun trying to catch some fish!!! Next week everyone should be excited for the opportunity to have some choice in the build they do! Being our last class i look forward to seeing which build the class will choose and how they’ll customize they’re builds to make it their own!

Communication ECA Phase 1 Class 6: Charge up Dragster 20191016

Last week we build a charge up dragster. There were 2 parts to the build, the charging tower with the motor and the dragster car. The tower had a lever that lifted the car off the ground and connecting the car wheels to the motor through a series of gears. The wheels gain up speed so that when the car is brought back to the ground the car drives off. This was probably my favorite build so far to do with the class because of its complex gears and features.

DRAGSTER

Today’s class, we made car fly.  After last week, students have better understanding of group works and they successfully finished their project.  It has four gears but each two of them are separated.  When the gears connect, the car is lifted and it starts to build up momentum.  When the gears disconnect, car flies away due to those momentum.  Other than our project, we had a pre-halloween Q&A contest about Superheros from DC universe and Marvel universe.  They all got their KitKat as reward.

Go Fish

Today is my last class with the students.  It has been fun and educational for Bothe side I think. I practice my teaching skills with them and they have been respectful. Final day ended with a fishing contest.  We have variety styles of fishes and different length of rods.  All makes it difficult to catch the fish.  There were some fun facts questions for them to get some candy as well.  The boys were dominant but the girl get them in the fishing contest.  Overall I love teaching this class and I will be back next semester.

Communication ECA Phase 1 Class 5: Pump and Run Flywheeler 20191009

Last week we build a Fly wheeler. This build had a complex set of gears right at the heart of the set, these took great precision by the whole class to build accurately. The flywheeler used these gears to connect the bottom drag wheels to a set of top wheels. By rolling the car you can speed up the rotation of the top wheels so that when you release the car the top wheels have enough momentum to continuously rotate the main bottom wheels pushing the car forward. The class enjoyed playing with this build afterwards and experimenting with the different sizes of wheels to get the greatest output of distance. Next class we’ll be building a car again but with a few motor upgrades!!!

Communication ECA Phase 1 Class 4: Big Wheel Brick Sweeper 20191002

Week 4!!! Had a great time creating our Lego Sweepers. We used gear ratios again to speed up our Sweeper rotation speed! A big unique factor of this build was how the build connected the sweeper rotation to the wheel rotation. This engaged the sweeper when ever the vehicle was in motion! After the build we used lego blocks as trash and swept it out of the way using our new build! Everyone used their creative skills to upgrade the sweeper to have more arms and better efficiency! Can’t wait till next week, we’re building a flywheel roadster!!!

Communication ECA Phase 1 Class 3: Hammer Machine 20190925

Hello! Last class we built a hammer and attached it to a cam shaft. Using a crank we were able to move the hammer up and down hitting axles (nails) through different gears. As the experiment continued we noticed that different gears were tighter creating more friction around the axle (nail). Later we expanded and attempted to add more weight on to our hammer to increase its efficiency! I was very impressed with everyone’s understanding on the cam shaft and its different positions! I look forward to next week when we’ll be building a sweeper like the ones we see in calgary to pick up rocks!

Communication ECA Phase 1 Class 2: Big Wheel Balance 20190918

Today we worked on a lego balance! We learnt about how to use weights in different positions along the beam to create equilibrium. After this all the kids challenged themselves in adding as much lego as they could to the balance while still keeping equilibrium. This included some outrageous designs and creativity involving monster truck wheels and braces! I was very impressed in their understanding and incredible creativity today! Can’t wait till next week!

Communication ECA Phase 1 Class 1: Car Race 20170911

Hello! It was really great meeting you all last week! Last class we built a model car using a battery pack and a motor. We learnt about connecting gears and used our knowledge of gear ratios on our cars! We found out that when the big gear is attached to the motor it spins the small gear faster giving our cars more speed. Everyone really enjoyed the race we had afterwards to test our models. Next week we will keep working on trying to keep our Lego pieces organized and together as we build our next model. I look forward to seeing you all!
