The last class was a good exercise in teamwork and project management. While under supervision, the kids found it easy to divide the work among themselves, building the fish and the mechanical rod separately. At the end of the class they were happy to take their time to play. The next class will be the last session of this semester. It will be followed by a separate class for those who are interested in computer programming, where we will be teaching the Python programming language. Also, stage 2 classes will start next week.
PBP Phase 1: Class 5: Flywheeler
Today the students built the flywheel powered car and we talked about moment. The kids seemed to have a bit of trouble recognising that the car needed some time to charge up the wheels. A few build issues were encountered regarding the gearbox though some of these were due to the fault of the model.
Next week we are building a dragster powered by an external drive
ECA Final Project Session
The kids had a great time in the last class as they got the opportunity to work on anything they wanted. Everybody seemed to be happy to play around and show each other what they had built. Also at the end of the class, the kids received their certificates for passing stage one. I am very impressed and satisfied with their conduct over the past eight weeks and really look forward to starting a new semester next Wednesday.
Communication ECA Phase I Class 5: Fly Wheel 20180207
This class went much better than the previous classes in the sense that more children were able to finish their projects and assignments in time, which gave them a bit of free-play time at the end of the class. As usual, this class allowed them to practice scientific concepts related to mechanics and supplied them with an in-class assignment to make sure they have grasped the material. Concepts such as preservation of energy and inertia were practiced, and the assignment asked them to predict the position of their vehicle after it had been launched. I was very happy with their performance, and even happier to see that their work is improving each week.
PBP Phase 1: Class 4: Sweeper
Today we Built the Sweeper and learned about gear ratios. The students seemed to like playing with the sweeper but had a few technical difficulties regarding the construction of the machine. The topic for next week is the Flywheeler. Thank you for you continued help for a timely cleanup.
See you next week!
ECA Phase I 20180131 The Sweeper
The kids really enjoyed playing with the Sweeper. The project was a moving vehicle with rotating axles at the bottom that cleared the way as it moved forward. The concepts were based on gear mechanics and velocity. The class assignment gave the kids an opportunity to experiment with different gears and learn which ones are more efficient. Next week we will be working on more fun projects that are also based on applied physical concepts. As great as it is to have a passionate class with curious students, we ask the children to please respect the allotted time of the class, and make sure their work is done before 7 pm.
PBP Phase 1: Class 3: Power Hammer
This week we built the Power Hammer in order to understand the principles of Friction as well as Potential Energy. The students seemed to have enjoyed the activity despite a few mix ups. In the next class we will be building a car that’s powered by a flywheel. All the students are well behaved.
PBP Phase 2: Class 2: Windmill
I apologise for the late Classminutes as there were some technical difficulties on my end.
Last class the students built a Windmill in order to learn the principles of wind energy and the effect of surface area on the power output. The students were able to finish all the models on time, some did need help however, and help cleaning up was much appreciated. Avery is very adept at group work however some groups are a bit difficult to make work. Yuan appears to be very good with the kits and demonstrates an good understanding of the material. The students seemed to like the Windmill alot to the point where the fan providing the wind was overcrowded.
On friday the 26th we will be building the Walker.
Apologies for the late response.

PBP Phase 1: Class 2: Beam Balance
I apologise for the late Classminutes as there were some technical difficulties on my end.
Last class the students built a beam balance in order to measure and compare various loads. The students were able to finish all the models on time and help cleaning up was much appreciated. Lukas and Ryan are both fast builders and Selina has an eye for precision. The students seemed to like the balance alot and they found it fun to put various objects on the balance for their own experimentation.
On friday the 26th we will be building the Power Hammer.
Apologies for the late response.

Communication ECA Phase I 20180124 The Hammer
The hammer turned out to be a fun project. Although this class was more difficult than the previous classes, everyone was able to finish their work and fully understand what they were working on. The kids also worked on their class assignments and did the experiments at the end of the class. We really do understand that the classes are extremely fun and entertaining, but we ask the children to make sure their work is done before 8 o’clock so they still have enough time for putting their pieces in their boxes before the class is finished. Next week the kids will be working on The Sweeper which is another interesting project.
