First time in the North teaching and it felt great. The classroom is unique but most importantly, I get a whole class full of future stars in it. We built letter balance which needed group work. Kids were showing fantastic work ethic. What they need to improve is to follow the instruction step by step and be more patient. After they finished, some were trying to weight heavier objects like my watch and phone which they need to rescale the levels. It was fun to have this kind energy in my class and i hope they enjoied it as well. Looking forward to the next class.
PBP Phase Combined: Class 2 Letter Balance
Today we made the letter balance, which is also known as a weigh scale, and learned about moments. The students reacted favourably with most getting their models done on time, Richard however needs to improve his building time. The topic for next week is the Windmill Please ask the students to organise their kits a but better as we found various pieces out of place and also to use their indoor voices, I cannot talk loudly enough to be heard.
Communication ECA Phase II Class 4: The Letter Balance 20180328
The topic of today is the lever study using a letter balance model. The students first built a letter balance model, then they conducted the experiments to weigh various amount water to feel the level balance rule. The STEM information behind this section is the level balance. The level model composing of a four-bar mechanical mechanism, which is one of the most common and important mechanisms in industry. It will be discussed more in the following classes.
Due to an unexpected situation, the students were encouraged to design their own solutions to measure objects with different weight quantitatively. They all successfully solved the problem innovatively.

Phase II is the middle-level class of Play2Learn Education Lego Challenge Program. In the next 8 weeks, the students will have good opportunities to learn and practice the basic mechanical mechanisms including lever, wheel and axle, pulley, wedge and screw.
The topic of today is the lever study using the letter balance model built during the class. The students first built a letter balance model, then they conducted the experiments to weigh various amount water to feel the level balance rule. The STEM information behind this section is the level balance rules. The level model composing of a four-bar mechanical mechanism that will be discussed more in the following classes. All the students finished the model building part and did the experiment with different level. They enjoyed this section. More principle modules will be delivered to the student can learn some basic mechanical rules in Phase II.
PBP Phase 2: Class 1: Letter Balance
Today we built the Letter Balance after splitting into groups of two. All the students managed to finish quickly and even got their homework done in class. We learned about estimating weight and force due to gravity, while there was not enough time to explain torque the children seemed to enjoy themselves.
Next week’s model is the Windmill
The children were all we behaved and worked well with each other and I hope that they will continue to do so.
Communication ECA Phase II Class 1: The Letter Balance 20170913
Let us suppose we have to set up a post office and delivery service at Edgemont Community Association. We have a plan to write letters and send them to all friends in neighborhood. To make everything as real as possible, we need to design some very spectacular stamps and weigh all the letters and finding out what stamps to put on.
How to make a Balance for the different range of weight? Kids are thinking/designing/building the balance they need. They also figure out the balance scale, how to use the unit to find out how many units we need to weigh letters up.
