Nice to meet old friends and new people. Today we learn what is conservation of energy. They build hand generators to power up the car using energy generated by their hands. The whole process is to change kinetic Energy into electric Energy and change it back to kinetic again. It was a fun class and the learning environment is fantastic. Jeff loves to help and chat his neighbors, Jeffery and Micheal are such good problem solver, and last but not least, Lucas has shown great improvement compare to last semester. I am looking forward to have a great season with these guys.
PBP Phase 3 Week 1: Generator
Today we built the hand generator and learned a little bit about electricity, including, Volts, Amps, and Ohms. The kids looked like they were having fun with their projects. The topic for next week is a solar powered vehicle, the kids are all good at cleaning up by now however I ask that the students pay attention to their cleanup s they don’t break any parts.
ECA Phase 3 Topic 1: Hand generator
Today we got started with the basic principles of storing energy as well as defining the principle unit of energy, the joule, by building a car that can run on an rechargeable battery and can be charged by a hand cranked generator. The kids finished building the model fairly quickly however we did end up starting late. The kids had a lot of fun as they played with the motor and generator.
The model for next week is the Solar Vehicle, please ask the students to do a better job of cleanup as a few pieces were found on the floor.
Communication ECA Phase III Class 1: Hand Generator 20180307
Phase III is the highest level of class in Play2Learn Education Lego Challenge Program. In the next 8 weeks, different energy form transformations will be discussed including energy experiments between kinematic energy and potential energy, electrical energy and kinematic energy, heat (light) energy and electrical energy.
The class started with the explanation of the basic skills to use the power meter and motors. The class follows with building a hand generator that transfers kinematic energy to electrical energy. The kinematic energy is generated by the students’ hand. The generated energy was stored in the power meter. The class was intense because the students need to learn the principle model knowledge and finish the hand generator model building. However, after the first class, they gained a good understanding of the power meter and motors which laid a solid ground for the following classes.

Communication ECA Phase III Class 1: Generate Energy 20170913
The first class in Phase III is open for students in ECA. This is the highest level of class in Play2Learn Education Lego Challenge Program. In the next 8 weeks, we will have chance to practice different ways to generate energy; to experience pneumatic; to design machine arm; to construct a mechanism hand.
We do use the monitor today to find out how strong your hand is. Your hand scroll the hand generator to generator energy. The energy is measured in Joules and you can find it in the monitor. We know how strong your hand is, since we can quantitatively see your hand scrolling generate 100 Joules energy! Super! The energy can be used to move a car! What a fabulous experiments!
Andy and Ethan finished the construction quickly. They dived into the experiment soon. They use the different speed to roll the hand generator and record the amount of Joules they generated. The car is moving by the energy, and also the car is moving forward and backward.
Phase III needs more theoretical knowledge in the experiments. That is really a good activity to help kids audit and find what they learned in the classroom.
In the next week, we are going to try a new model boat pulley!
