Communication ECA Phase 1 Class 5: SkyRise Crane 20200205

Hello class! Im sure you all remember our build from last week! Our crane!!! We build a huge structure of a crane and attached a motor to the top for powered control. This was a very long and complex build and you all did very well! We used diagonal braces to stabilise the body of the crane. As we should know by now, triangle shapes are stronger then squares.

Next class is finally the time for our computers! So make sure you bring your laptop and the predownloaded software so we can get right into the fun!! See you all soon!!

Communication ECA Phase II Class 5: Tower Crane 20180404

The topic of today is the Tower Crane. A crane is generally equipped with ropes or chains that can be used both to lift or lower loads and to move them horizontally. It is mainly used for lifting heavy things and transporting them to other places. The device uses one or more pulleys to create mechanical advantage and thus move loads beyond the normal capability of a human. Cranes are commonly employed in the transport industry for the loading and unloading of freight, in the construction industry for the movement of materials, and in the manufacturing industry for the assembling of heavy equipment.

Two students first built three models with different pulley systems, then they conducted loads lifting experiments by using the built models. The speed and capacity of three tower crane models were compared. It’s clear to the students the crane who could lift heavier load had a lower speed. The STEM information behind this section is the mechanical advantage of pulley mechanisms. All students finished the model and experiments, they enjoyed the class.

PBP Phase 1: Class 7: Crane

Today we built the Crane and learned a bit more about the block and tackle which we had covered in previous lessons. The kids were determined to lift as much as they could today. Next week we will be building objects that the students designed in lego digital designer. Please help the students clean up after class.

Communication ECA Phase II Class 6: Motion: Tower Crane 20180214

The topic of today is the Tower Crane. A crane is generally equipped with ropes or chains that can be used both to lift and lower materials and to move them horizontally. It is mainly used for lifting heavy things and transporting them to other places. Cranes are commonly employed in the transport industry for the loading and unloading of freight, in the construction industry for the movement of materials, and in the manufacturing industry for the assembling of heavy equipment.

Two students built three models as a group, then they conducted load lifting experiments by using the built models. The speed and capacity of three tow crane models were compared. It’s clear to the students the crane who could lift heavier load had a lower speed. The STEM information behind this section is the crane’s mechanical advantage. All students finished the model and experiments, they enjoyed the class.

Communication ECA Phase II Class 6: The Tower Crane

The Crane was a fun project for the kids to play and experiment with. It was their most challenging task this term and although some of them finished early, some of the kids took a bit of time to finish. Overall, they enjoyed the process and reviewed concepts such as weight and force, while engineering a structure that could pull up a heavy object. Next week we will be learning how to design lego structures with the LDD software. Please remember to bring a laptop with the software installed to class, so the kids can finish the assignments in class.
