pneumatics??

Hello everyone!  welcome to a whole new challenge of Pneumatic!  First thing first, what actually is that?  It is a machine that containing or operated by air or gas under pressure.  This week, we test out some different way to use pneumatics.  Use it to read pressure in kpa as one of the units to measure it.  This week is not like last few weeks.  This is more concept related.  Student just need to understand it and it has really little calculations in it.  We will keep exploring pneumatics in the following weeks and more fun to come.

PBP Phase 3 Week 5: Pneumatics Basics

Today we learned about pneumatics using the pneumatics basic models. The students learned about the relationship between volume and pressure. The kids played around and experimented with their models quite a bit. The topic for next week is the scissor lift. Please have the students organize their kits.

ECA Phase 3 Topic 8: Robot Arm

Today we built the robot arm, it is an arm that is controlled by pneumatics as much of our course has covered in the past. Most of the kids were not able to finish due to arriving late and the complexity of the build. As today was the last day of classes I hope all the kids had fun during Phase 3 and we hope to see them back for Phase 4!

ECA Phase 3 Topic 7: Piston hand

Today we built the pneumatic hand and learned a bit about how pnuematics can be used to actuate devices, The students loved grabbing things with their grabbers and attempted to lift heavy weights. The topic for next week is a pneumatic arm.

Also sorry for the late Classminutes, my PC broke and I just managed to fix it.

ECA Phase 3 Topic 5: Pneumatics Basics

Today we built a demonstration model for the kids to get comfortable working on pneumatics and familiar with the pneumatic systems that we will be using in the coming classes. We did not manage to cover many STEM topics today, instead we covered safety with pneumatic devices and their operation. The students had fun but a few found it difficult to actually put the air hoses on the connector, this is not too large of a problem as many of them simply lack the finger strength that adults have. The topic next week is the Scissor Lift which will use a pneumatic cylinder to raise a platform. The students did a good job of cleaning up today however I would like the older kids to help the younger kids out just a bit more.

Communication ECA Phase III Class 7: Pneumatic: Robot Hand 20180418

Today we built a robot hand, which was a more complex application of the pneumatic system. The pneumatic robot hand composed pneumatic components from cylinders and pumps to the air valve, the air tank, and the manometer. With the built model, the students got a deeper understanding of the design philosophy and working principles of the pneumatic system, which built a solid ground for the next following even more advanced pneumatic robot arm model.

The STEM information behind this section is the application of pneumatic systems as well as the cylinder piston rod force output calculation, which can be calculated by multiplying the air pressure with the piston area. All the students finished the model and the experiments. And they conducted the objects grabbing with a lot of interests and fun.

Communication ECA Phase III Class 5: Pneumatics: Principal Model 20180404

The class of today is the principal model of pneumatics system. It’s the first section of the following four pneumatics system study. The main purpose of the class is to learn the basic knowledge of the pneumatics parts. In this section, one model consisting all key important pneumatics parts was built. The model consists components of cylinders, pumps, the air valve, the air tank, and the manometer. With the help of the model they built, the students learned the design philosophy and working principles of all these parts, which built a solid ground for the next following advanced pneumatic application models.

The STEM information behind this section is the pneumatic systems including the cylinder, tubes, and the air pressure measurement instruments. All the students followed the tutor instructions and finished the designed model experiments.

Communication ECA Phase II Class 3: The Windmill 20180321

The topic of today is the windmill. The students built a windmill to learn the energy conversions between wild energy and rotational energy by the blade mechanism. Windmills were used to mill grain, pump water in the history, but the majority of modern windmills take the form of wind turbines used to generate electricity, or wind pumps used to pump water. In the class, we used a weight as water to mimic the pumping water process. The STEM information behind this section is the energy transformation as well as force and motion concepts.

All students finished the model and conducted tests with a different level, they enjoyed the class. The ability level of the students vary, thus it needs to arrange them wisely to make sure all of them can at least finish the model building part.

Communication ECA Phase III Class 3: Pneumatics: Principal Model 20180131

The class of today is the principal model of pneumatic system. It’s also the first section of the following four pneumatic system study. The main purpose of the class is to learn the basic knowledge of the pneumatic systems. In this section, one complex pneumatic was built. The model consists components of cylinders, pumps, the air valve, the air tank, and the manometer. With the help of the model they built, the students learned the design philosophy and working principles of the cylinder, the pump, the air valve, the air tank, and the manometer, which built a solid ground for the next following advanced pneumatic application models.

The STEM information behind this section is the pneumatic systems including the cylinder, tubes, and the air pressure measurement instruments. All the students followed the tutor instructions and finished the designed model experiments.

Reflection to the Principal Model of Pneumatic: Different with the last semester, the students were required to build the most complex model only. It gave the tutor more time to teach the basic concept and skills of pneumatic system, which is the main purpose of the class.

Communication ECA Phase III Class 7: Pneumatic: Robot Hand 20171025

The theme of today is building a robot hand model, which is a more complex application of the pneumatic system. In this section, the pneumatic robot hand consists pneumatic components from cylinders and pumps to the air valve, the air tank, and the manometer.
